Dave Webb
Dave Webb is an author and educator from Pennsylvania. He has been an elementary school teacher for 30 years and is a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). He wrote about his career in education in a memoir entitled Mr. Nomad: Tales of a Traveling Teacher, which was reviewed in a print edition of Publishers Weekly in November, 2016.
Webb started his writing career in his teens as a sports writer for a weekly newspaper, then moved on to writing entertainment reviews and feature stories for the Times Leader in Wilkes-Barre. Soon he felt a calling to the field of education. He has taught at elementary schools in three states: Pennsylvania, Virginia, and North Carolina.
After becoming a teacher, Webb had an itch to do more writing. That's when he decided to write a trilogy of humorous children's books with story lines loosely based on true events. Thus, the Slinky Inkermann series was born. Slinky Inkermann and the Crazy Contest (intended for readers ages 8-12) was first published in 1996. A second edition came in 1998, followed by two sequels. The third edition of the Crazy Contest book is available at www.bn.com and www.amazon.com, as is the third book in the series, Middle School Mania, published in 2012. .
Webb's most heart-wrenching book is a short novel for young adults entitled Amber. It was drafted in 1997 and finally published in 2007, with cover photographs of actress and model, Bella Thorne taken by her mother, Tamara Thorne. The book tells the story of a young girl whose troubled home life causes her to hear disturbing voices. She tries to deal with her problems by escaping into a type of fantasy world, since her mom is almost never available to help her. Eventually she runs away and meets up with another girl on the run, who shows her how to survive on the street. This emotion-filled story is fast-paced and addresses the problem of domestic abuse and neglect from a child's point of view. It is intended for readers ages 11 and up (due to its emotional intensity) and is available in both print and e-book versions. A sequel, Amber Lee, was published in March of 2013.
Webb's other writing credits include writing articles for WeAreTeachers.com and BoredTeachers.com. He also contributed educational units and lessons to books published by The Mailbox (The Education Center, LLC) which prints books and magazines containing ideas for teachers. Those books, including 730 Journal Prompts, can be found at teacher stores across the country. He also wrote a four-part fictional series for the Lexington Dispatch in North Carolina entitled "Back in 2000," which helped that newspaper win a New York Times award for millennium coverage in 1999.
Webb has appeared on television talk shows on BRCTV and WYLN in Hazleton and radio programs on WILK radio to discuss his books and their themes. He's also appeared several times at the Family Reading Festival in the Fairlane Village Mall in Pottsville, PA to help kids get excited about reading.
